Health Concerns

 

Although health studies have not been conducted on the Appenzeller Sennenhund, they have been for a number of closely related breeds.  Based on these studies, the breed may be susceptible to the following conditions:

 

 

There is no substitute for a healthy puppy. No dog, whether purebred or mixed breed, can be guaranteed a life that is free of health problems and an Appenzeller is no exception. Conscientious breeders research health issues and the methods for inheritance of genetic problems. Through careful and informed breeding, great progress has been achieved in lessening the number of health concerns that affect the Appenzeller.

 

Recommended Health Tests for Appenzell Mountain Dogs (required tests are asterisked):

  • * Elbow Dysplasia

  • * CAER (Companion Animal Eye Registry)

  • Autoimmune thyroiditis

  • Degenerative Myelopathy

  • Cardiac Evaluation

  • Shoulder OCD Evaluation
